Spyros Condos, 84, was born in Chios Island on May 16, 1941, the second son of George and Anastasia Condos. His relationship with the U.S.A began when his grandfather and great uncle emigrated to New York City at the beginning of the 20th century. Spyros, went to University of Athens school of Pharmacy but in 1964 after the invitation of his American aunt May Condos, he came to the USA as an international student and continued his studies at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. After a short period living in Greece, he returned in the USA and in 1971 started his employment at Yale Medical School where he remained until 2001 that he took early retirement from Yale and went to Greece to serve in the Ministry of Health. In 1973 he married Athena Sophia Fragou in Athens, Greece and was the father of George and Anastasia Condos. Spyros and Athena were married happily for 53 years until his death, due to complications of diverticulitis at YNHH, on Friday, March 12, 2026. He was predeceased by his brother, Constantinos Condos. He is survived by his wife Athena, his son George, his daughter Anastasia, son-in-law Thanos Mucaj, and his granddaughter Amelia Athena who gave him great happiness with her coming into his life. He enjoyed playing with Amelia and sharing his love of painting and colors with her. He is also survived by his nieces Anastasia and Katerina of Chios, Greece.
His long employment at Yale where he served in different positions in the department of surgery gave him the opportunity to travel to many countries representing the University and gave him great professional satisfaction. His other great accomplishment was the building of St. Basil, Greek Orthodox Church, in downtown New Haven. While the church was in operation from 1992 using a simpler structure, in 2019, the basilica style church became a reality.
