Sister Marie Bruna Loh was born Aileen Loh May 24, 1941 in Singapore to Buddhist parents.
She died on Jan. 7, 2026 at the age of 84. Her parents were Kim Seng Loh and Wong Poh
Cheng. She is survived by her brother Chew Weng Fong and sister Candace Wong, nieces and
nephews, and members of her monastic community.
At the age of 12 she was baptized a Roman Catholic. As a young child she was struck by the
disease of polio and underwent many surgical operations to treat it. She even spent 6 months in
an iron lung. Despite the polio she followed her first love, music, by studying ot the Royal
Conservatory of Music in Singapore. Through meeting a woman at church whose daughter was
a member of the Benedictines of Jesus Crucified in France, Aileen learned of this community
that accepts physically handicapped women. She made contact and was eventually accepted.
She entered the community on March 30, 1967, not knowing any French. She made her first
profession on Oct. 3, 1969 and perpetual profession on Aug. 15, 1975. During her monastic life
she continued to practice her musical gifts and other gifts as well.
Friends are invited to a viewing at 10:30 AM in St. Mary Church of St. John Bosco Parish, 731
Main St. Branford, followed by her funeral Mass at 11:00 AM on Wednesday January 14. Burial
will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the
Benedictines of Jesus Crucified, St Mary’s Home, 2021 Albany Ave., Apt. 456, West Hartford,
CT 06117.
