Sr. Marie Marcella Geraghty, 87, of the Congregation of the Benedictines of Jesus Crucified of the Monastery of the Glorious Cross, Branford passed away in St. Mary’s Home, West Hartford August 30, 2018. Born in Fermore Streete, County Westmeath, Ireland April 14, 1931 she was one of twelve children, 10 girls & 2 boys, of the late Patrick and Bridget Reynolds Geraghty. Sister was predeceased by a brother and several sisters. Sr. Marcella had a long recuperation after being afflicted with TB. She entered the religious order on Sept. 30 1964 at St. Joseph Priory in France then lived at St. Therese Priory, also in France before moving to St. John’s Priory in England in 1967 where she eventually made her perpetual profession on April 25, 1973. Sr. Marcella remained in England until the priory closed in 1996 then moving to Regina Mundi Priory in Devon, PA then to St. Paul’s Priory in Newport, RI before moving to the Monastery of the Glorious Cross in December of 2001. Sister was an excellent printer while in England where the sisters had a good size printing business. Once she moved to St. Mary’s Home in October of 2017 her sense of humor made her a much loved resident. Thanks to the wonders of technology Sr. Marcella was able to Facetime her sister Rita in Ireland as they both prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet out loud while her niece Marcelline her the phone to her ear. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Monastery of the Glorious Cross 61 Burban Dr. Branford Monday (Today) from 4-8 PM and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in the Monastery Chapel Tuesday morning at 11:00. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Monastery of the Glorious Cross. Funeral arrangements in care of the Celentano Funeral Home, New Haven.
