MORRIS, MARY SIMOS. Mary Simos Morris of West Haven passed away in her sleep on Saturday, July 13th. She was recovering from surgeries after two sequential falls. Mary was born in 1932 to Greek immigrants Michael and Panayota Simos at their Platt Avenue farm that since has become the neighborhood of Simos Street. Trained as a secretary, her typing and stenographic skills impressed everyone for decades as she adapted to computers, smart phones, social media and GIFs. She met and fell in love with Philip Morris, an immigrant from war torn Greece, in the early 1950’s and they married in 1954. They raised two sons in Orange, Philip Morris, Jr. (Kathleen) and Michael Morris (Dena). All the while she alternated between office administrative positions and working with her husband to found Philip’s Photography in Milford, then Mister Donut of Derby and later a small home repair business in Guilford. When they retired, they spent winters in Vero Beach, Florida where she made lifelong friends. Mary was thoroughly a West Havener. She was graduated from West Haven High School, worked at the West Haven Community Center, lived near Oyster Bay, and had as her last meal apizza from Zuppardi’s, a lifelong addiction. Deeply influenced by growing up with five brothers, she was an active professional, independent thinker and equal partner with her husband, who predeceased her in 2015. She was also predeceased by brothers George, John, Anthony; and brother-in-law George Morris. Her survivors will remember her humor, hospitality and love of family expressed by attendance at thousands of games, concerts and events. In addition to her sons, survivors are: brothers Gus Simos (Marie), Nick Simos (Florence); in-laws Gregory Mouratidis (Ellie); sister-inlaw, Linda Morris; and five grandchildren: Meghan Morris (Nate Ela), Sophia Lingane (Patrick), Lecco Morris; Micaela Karpich (Eric) and Marla Vogelfanger (Grant). She adored and celebrated her two great grandchildren, Philomena and Calixto Morris-Ela as well as many nieces and nephews. Her supportive, surviving friends at Baybrook Arms always challenged her in Scrabble, cards and dominos. The family asks that expressions of sympathy be made in her memory noting the George Morris Scholarship Fund c/o St. Barbara’s Church (saintbarbara.org). A wake will take place at 2:00 pm with a funeral service following on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at St Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange, CT. Interment in Orange Center Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of the Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. New Haven, CT
