Leonidas “Louie or Leo” Kattis, born on October 20, 1939, in Leonidio, Greece, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2024, at the Branford Hospice, with his family by his side, at the age of 84. He was the beloved husband of Antonia Moriatis Kattis and a dedicated family man.
He is survived by his loving wife Antonia, and his devoted children Maria Grohs (Wayne) of Guilford, Nicholas Kattis (Sophia) also from Guilford, and Georgios Kattis (Anastasia) of North Haven. He leaves behind a legacy in his cherished grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews scattered across Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida, and Leonidio, Greece. As one of seven siblings, he was predeceased by his brothers Dimitrios and Konstantinos, and sister Mila, all of whom were from Greece.
Leonidas, originally a skilled carpenter, left Greece and relocated his family to the United States in 1972. He demonstrated remarkable diligence by working simultaneously at SNET in New Haven and, after a few years, also joining the transport department at Saint Raphael’s Hospital. His efforts were driven by a desire to provide a better future and educational opportunities for his children. After retiring, he enjoyed assisting in his son’s restaurant and tending to his vegetable gardens, which were a source of pride and joy, yielding fresh produce for family and friends each summer and fall.
Leonidas was known for his strong work ethic, always doing what was necessary to support his family. His love for his children was clear in the simple, everyday moments as well as the big milestones, showing his commitment through actions rather than words. He consistently prioritized his family's needs, demonstrating his devotion through his willingness to make personal sacrifices. His approach to life was practical and grounded in the belief that taking care of his family was the most important responsibility, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and the importance of family.
His life was also filled with simple pleasures, like enjoying coffee with his good friends at Athena Diner in North Haven. Louie's commitment as a husband and father left a legacy of love and cherished memories for his family and friends.
