Louis W. Basel, 97, of Derby, formerly of Foster St., New Haven passed away March 22, 2018 in Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Marie Constantinedes Basel. Born in New Haven on Nov. 12, 1920, he was the son of the late William E. and Antiopi Peperidou Basel. A well known restaurateur, he operated Basel’s Restaurant on State St. in New Haven for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1987. During World War II, he served as a technical sergeant in the US Army. He was a faithful member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church and New Haven Chapter 98, Order of AHEPA. He is survived by two daughters, Martha (Jonathan) Wyatt and Claudia Basel; one brother, Edward (Lillian) Basel; one sister, Florence Barakis; two grandchildren, Rebecca Miller (John) and Joshua Wyatt (Brie Lowenstein); and a great grandchild, Elizabeth Catherine Miller. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Faraclas.
Friends are invited to attend Services in St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange Wednesday morning at 10:30. Calling hours prior to the service will be from 9:00 to 10:30. Interment in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to St. Barbara Church Building Fund
