Katie Gray Obituary

On April 21, 2022, God sent his angels to receive Katie M. Gray from her home at 13 Admiral Street, New Haven, CT.

Katie was born on December 25, 1923 to the late Katie Mae and George Gray in Aurora, North Carolina.  Katie attended S.W. Snowden Elementary and High School in Aurora, North Carolina.  Katie was a former employee at Former Winchester Repeating Arms Company, where she worked as a firearm inspector for 40 years.  Katie was a member of the Varick Memorial AME Zion Church.  Katie was a strong advocate for the people of her community.  She was always willing and able to help someone in need.  Katie was a great listener to all that came to her.  She was always clear and concise with her advice when anyone asked her.  She said what she meant and meant what she said, and if you did not want the truth, you should not ask.  Katie had a beautiful garden in the backyard full of collard greens and other vegetables.  Katie loved to travel.  Katie enjoyed visiting with her family.  She reminded family that we need to get to know our People. Family meant everything to Katie.  Katie as one of the eldest was fill of the family history and she shared it with everyone that she came in contact with.

She is predeceased by (10) siblings: Nettie Woody, Mary Louise Saunders, Josephine Freeman, William Henry Gray, Walter Gray, Johnny Gray, Leroy Gray, step siblings; Sadie Smith-Cobb, Johnny Smith and Mahue Smith; predeceased by her only child Tyrone Bonito; (2) predeceased grandchildren: Tyshann Bonito and Damien Bonito.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her (3) grandchildren: Derrick Powell (Tamika) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Kimberly Johnson of Hamden, Connecticut and Roderick Bonito of Bayonne, New Jersey; (4) great grandchildren; Tayvon Ross, Carter Powell, Taylor Bonito and Josiah Bonito, (3) God-children, Evelyn Nevers, David McAdoo and Phil Blumell, her special great niece:  Tanya Palmore, her special friends and neighbors: Ms. Lindsey Ruminski and Earl Bradley and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
