Janice Marie Barone passed away on August 3, 2023 in Woodbridge, CT. She was born January 16, 1928 in Bridgeport, the daughter of Edgar and Valeda Gourd Romberg. She graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1945 and attended Larsons College. She worked at the New Haven Board of Education before she married Joseph Barone in 1949, who predeceased her in 1986. They lived in New Haven for a short time and built a house in Bethany in 1953 where they raised a family of eight children. Janice lived there for 68 years where countless memories of birthdays, graduations, weddings, holidays, and summer picnics with cousins and neighbors were made. She was a parishioner at Our Lady of the Assumption church and participated in many of their organizations over the years. Janice sang with the American Union of Swedish Singers for several years, and enjoyed many concerts and trips with the group.
She loved doing crosswords, playing scrabble with her kids and playing the piano. She baked great Christmas cookies, eggplant parmesan, Easter Bread and pignoli cookies. She taught her girls to sew and all her children to cook. She loved music and passed that appreciation on to her family. She encouraged her kids to be respectful, honest and kind to others, and above all, to love God.
Janice is survived by her children Paul (Jennifer), Michael (Dana), and Donald (Lauren Alpert) Barone, and Joanne King (Harris), Carolyn Hofmann (Frank) and Mary Barone (Al Drozdowski); daughter-in-law, Darlene Barone; 7 grandchildren, Nick, James, and Sarah Barone, Luke and Thomas Barone, and Will and Clara Drozdowski; and 2 great grandchildren, Eli and Delia Barone.
Besides her husband, and parents, she was predeceased by her sons Thomas Barone and David Barone and her brother, Robert Romberg.
The family thanks the many caregivers that helped her over the last few years in her home, especially Mollie, and the staff at the Linden in Woodbridge.
She was a great Mom, Grandma, Memere, Mimi and friend with a warm smile and a kind heart. She will be greatly missed.
There will be a calling hour in the vestibule of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Center Road, Woodbridge at 10 AM, Tuesday August 8, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Burial will take place immediately after the Mass at St Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven.
