IRENE (Cuticello) FLYNN Obituary

Irene Cuticello Flynn, age 77, a longtime resident of New Haven died Feb. 19, 2018. She was the beloved wife of Edward F. Flynn Jr. for 56 years. She was born in New Haven November 23, 1940 to the late James and Lillian Concilio Cuticello. She was married on her twenty-first birthday on Thanksgiving Day in 1961. Prior to her retirement she had worked as secretary at Saint Bernadette Church in New Haven and secretary at Saint Elizabeth Church in Branford. For many years, prior to raising her family, she was employed at the First New Haven National Bank and New Haven Bank N.B.A. She was a parishioner of Saint Bernadette Church for over five decades, a former Eucharistic Minister, and active in many parish and school activities.

Irene served as president of the Saint Catello Society of New Haven for twelve years, the third oldest Italian-American society in the Greater New Haven area. She has also been a member of the Columbus Day Committee of Greater New Haven, The American Committee on Italian Migration and the American Italian Women of Greater New Haven. She was honored with an appreciation award from the Saint Catello Society on September 13, 2015.

For the past several years Irene was a resident at the Village at Mariner’s Point Assisted Living in East Haven. Special thanks to the Village staff and the Visiting Nurse Association of Guilford for guiding her through some difficult times. Her care was also ongoing by Encompass Home Health, the Guilford House, Gaylord Specialty Health Care in Wallingford and Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care.

Irene and her husband enjoyed the opportunity to travel and have vacationed in Ireland, Italy, Sicily, Alaska, Aruba, Bermuda, Bahamas, Florida, New Orleans, Toronto, Las Vegas, Lake George, Cape Cod, Washington D.C., Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, Niagara Falls Canada, and Newport.

In addition to her husband Irene is survived by her children: Edward (Renee) Flynn III of New Haven and Kathleen Del Visco of Cheshire. Grandchildren Evan and Ian Flynn, Olivia and Ava Del Visco and a sister Rosalie (Frank) Merola of Fort Myers, Florida and brother Catello (Debra) Cuticello of Fort Myers, Florida. She was also the beloved daughter-in-law of the late Edward “Shrimp” Flynn and Henrietta Wulff Flynn.

Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Friday from 3 to 7 pm and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bernadette’s Church, 385 Townsend Ave. Saturday morning at 10:00 am.
