Helen Mountzouris Obituary

Helen Mountzouris, 102, beloved wife of the late Eleftherios Mountzouris, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2022 at the Mary Wade Home in New Haven.  She was born in New York City on December 5, 1919 to the late Theodore and Despina Papas. She grew up in the Bronx and lived in Brooklyn for most of her life until moving to Connecticut in 1999 to be near her family. In 2008 she made her residence at the Mary Wade Home where she enjoyed the company of the staff and residents.  We would like to thank the staff at the Mary Wade Home (Boardman and Kimberly 1) and most recently the staff at Connecticut Hospice for their tireless dedication, kindness, and love.

Helen was a New Yorker and was proud of it.  Upon moving to CT she didn’t hesitate to tell anyone that she was a “New Yawkah – once a New Yawkah, always a New Yawkah”.  She loved sharing about her life in New York: going to day games to see the Yankees play with her best friend, Helen Waters, singing in the choir at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Manhattan, or going to Broadway shows.  When she moved to Connecticut she enjoyed being part of St. Barbara’s Golden Years Club and always signed up for their trips to see Broadway shows.  Despite her 5’ stature she was the life of the party with a smile or a laugh for those around her.  Her positivity and sense of humor will be missed.

She is survived by her beloved son and daughter-in-law, Evans and Christina, and two cherished grandchildren, James and Steven.  Helen is also survived by several nieces and nephews whom she adored.  She was predeceased by her sisters Katherine, Irene, Sophie, her brother, Gus and her dear friend, Helen Waters.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday August 22, 2022 in St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Rd. Orange, CT at 11:00 AM. Friends and family may pay their respects in church from 10:00 – 11:00. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery Milford, CT.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Mary Wade Home 118 Clinton Avenue, New Haven, CT 06513 or Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church 480 Racebrook Road, Orange, CT 06477. The Celentano Funeral Home is caring for Helen’s arrangements.
