Florence Basel Barakis, 101, of Branford passed away peacefully Sept. 5, 2023. Florence was born March 4, 1922 in New Haven to the late William Elias and Antiopi Basel. She was the Salutatorian of the class of 1940 of Commercial High School. She received an Associate Degree with honors from Quinnipiac University. Florence was a faithful communicant of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Orange and was an active volunteer, especially at the Church’s annual Odyssey Festival. She was also a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. Florence was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan since she was 16 years old.
Florence leaves daughters; Bonnie of West Haven, Cynthia (John) of Hamden, and Karen (Ralph) of New York City; three grandchildren, Zachery (Ave) Rosenberg, and Ralphie and Violet Prete. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Stanley to whom she was married for 63 years, brothers Louis (Marie) and Edward (Lillian) Basel and sister Helen (George) Faraclas.
Friends and family are invited to attend Funeral Services at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church 480 Racebrook Rd., Orange Wednesday September 13th at 11:00 AM. Calling hours in church prior to the service from 10:00 - 11:00. Interment with her husband will follow in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Barbara Building Fund. Arrangements are in care of the Celentano Funeral Home, New Haven.
