Evelyn Santagata, age 100, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017 after a long and accomplished life. Evelyn was a lifelong resident of New Haven, born October 10, 1916, to parents Francesco and Alfonsina Santagata who immigrated to the United States from Naples Italy.
Evelyn’s family owned a grocery market in the former Hill section of New Haven and Evelyn had a long career in the Strouse, Adler Garment Company where she retired as a supervisor.
Besides her parents, Evelyn was predeceased in death by her brothers William, Liberato and Joseph Santagata: sisters Anna Riccio, Constance Santagata, Alice Tulumello, Helen Santagata, Viola Mattucci and Frances McGrath. She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews and dear friend, caregiver and neighbor Maritza Gant.
She will be remembered by her family for her passion for life, writing, nature, and her love of all animals. A devout catholic, she was a member of St. Anthony’s Church.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Advanced Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Haven, for their loving care of Evelyn over the past few years.
Funeral services will be held in The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Monday, April 10th at 11:00 am. Friends may call prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery will take place at a later date.
