ERIC BOHMAN Obituary

Eric James Bohman died on Saturday, October 2nd 2021,. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lou Ann, their son Leif, daughter-in-law, Erika, and two grandchildren, Annika and Lars. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Gladys Bohman, and his brother Robert Bohman.

Eric was born on March 29, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Dondero High School where he was co-valedictorian and a standout tennis player. Eric attended Amherst College and married his wife, Lou Ann, after his sophomore year. He was active in the anti-war movement and was the president of the college’s chapter of the Students for Democratic Society. After Eric graduated from Amherst in 1970, the couple moved to New Haven where Eric completed a PhD at Yale in American History. He taught at Trinity College in Hartford and then worked at Tamarkin and Company, where he sold collectible photographic equipment. He was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of Leica cameras, and his clients ranged from passionate amateurs to collectors and professional photographers. He made many friends in the camera business and enjoyed trips with the Leica Historical Society throughout the US and Germany.

Eric particularly loved his time and travels with family. During annual visits to the family cottage in Pilgrim, Michigan, he spent many hours searching for Petoskys on the shores of Lake Michigan and playing cribbage with his son and parents. After chaperoning their son’s high school trip to Italy, he and Lou Ann made several trips back, to further appreciate the beauty of the Tuscan countryside and its art, food, and wine. Eric was a “foodie” before it was common to find prosciutto in the supermarket. Holiday tables were always topped with dishes the family made together, like his annual preparation of Julia Child’s mushroom soup. He and Lou Ann prided themselves on welcoming friends and family to their home for special meals. He had a lifelong passion for music, from classical to jazz, rock, and blues. An avid reader of fiction, nonfiction, and the New York Times, Eric also loved running, racquet sports and watching tennis and soccer. In later years he found solace and creative expression in pottery. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, Eric was known for his quiet strength, convictions, and intellectual curiosity.

Gifts can be made in his honor to Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, where Eric took pottery classes. https://creativeartsworkshop.org/donate/
