Dr. John V. Conte, DDS, 88, died June 12, 2017 at his residence in Catonsville, MD. He was the beloved husband of Mary Agnes Fitzgerald Conte. Dr. Conte was born in New Haven Aug. 10, 1928, son of the late Vincent Charles and Rose Caporale Conte. He graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1946; attended Providence College from 1947 to 1950 and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1954 with a degree in Dental Surgery. He did a residency in Oral Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1954 to 1956 and was a Captain in the US Army from 1956 to 1958, serving as Oral Surgeon to the Pentagon and the White House. He was in private practice as an oral surgeon in New Haven from 1958 to 1991, with privileges at St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was licensed in both Connecticut and Maryland. He was a member of Fr. Donaher Council 3373, Knights of Columbus in North Haven as well as Commodore John Barry Assembly 97, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the K of C for 49 years. He was a founding parishioner of St. Frances Cabrini parish where he served as an usher and was a member of the Men’s Club. He was a Conn. State Police Surgeon; was president of the Conn. Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 1974 to 1977 and secretary of the New England Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 1972 to 1974. He was a member of the CT. State Dental Association Hospital Dental Services Committee from 1964 to 1972 and was a consultant to the American Dental Association’s Committee on Hospital Dental Services from 1964 to 1970. He was a member of the New Haven, Connecticut State and American Dental Associations, Connecticut Society and American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Besides his wife of 61 years, Dr. Conte is survived by his four children, Dr. John V. (Dianne) Conte Jr. of Ellicott City, MD; Mary Frances (Michael) Etter of Medford, N.J.; Kathleen Conte (Gregg) Ayres of Calabasas, CA. and Theresa (Michael) Lagonigro of Westminster, MD.; his twin sister, Catherine Esposito of Hamden; 13 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces & grand nephews.
Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Thursday from 5 to 8 pm. and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 57 Pond Hill Road, North Haven Friday morning at 11:00. Interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven.
