Carolina (aka Carolyn) DeGennaro (nee Zarro) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, July 23, 2021 in Woodbridge, Connecticut at the age of 100. Born on June 30, 1921 in Hamden, CT, Carolyn was the daughter of Vincenzo Zarro and Alphonsina Sandillo. She lived in Hamden for her childhood and early life and attended Hamden High School. She was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore DeGennaro. After they were married in 1948, the couple moved to Woodbridge where they raised their family. In the early days, Carolyn worked alongside her husband on the family farm while raising four children. Later in life she amazed her family and friends by becoming a school bus driver for the Head Start Program in the Woodbridge school system. As a homemaker, Carolyn was an exceptional cook - known especially for her homemade tomato sauce and pickled eggplant - and loved to host large picnics in the family’s backyard to the enjoyment of many. In April 2019, she was honored by Woodbridge Human Services with the Woodbridge Center’s first Living Treasure Award for her dedication to the town and years of community service. Since 2018, she lived at Coachman Square in Woodbridge where she loved playing bingo and cornhole with her best friend Barbara. She was a long-time parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. One of her many lasting legacies will be the colorful and intricate afghans she crocheted as gifts as well as baby blankets to comfort the new-born children of family and friends. She is survived by her four children, Louis, Salvatore, Carol, and Joan, seven grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren for whom her memory is a blessing. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 80 Center Rd., Woodbridge. The family will receive friends at church one hour prior from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Woodbridge or a charity of one’s choice.
