Frances Lorusso Bimonte, 89, formerly of 315 Eastern St., New Haven, passed away May 11, 2008 in Bel Air Manor, Newington. Born in New Haven Feb. 2, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Giacomo & Victoria Carasone Lorusso. She worked for C. Cowles Co. in New Haven for several years prior to retirement. She is survived by a daughter, Donna McKean of Newington; 2 sons, John Bimonte of North Haven and Barry Bimonte of New Haven; 2 sisters, Philomena Esposito of Middletown & Dorothy Syniec of Chicopee, MA.; 5 grandchildren & 1 great grandchild. She was predeceased by 3 brothers, Mattie, Joseph & Donald Lorusso.

Herbert “Butterball” Curtis Jr., 79, of 51 Antrim St., West Haven, passed away May 11, 2008 in Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Carol Hopwood Curtis. Mr. Curtis was born in Badin, Stanly County, North Carolina Aug. 27, 1928, son of the late Herbert & Parthene Barringer Curtis. He worked as a machinist for Winchester Repeating Arms and US Repeating Arms for many years prior to retirement. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. At one time, he was a pitcher for the Kansas City Monarchs baseball team in the Negro Leagues. Besides his wife, he is survived by sons, Herbert (Diane Harris) Curtis III & Levy Curtis, both of New Haven, Clarence McAlpine of San Diego; step sons, George Curry Jr. of New Haven, Donald Hopwood of West Haven & Tony Jones of Philadelphia; daughters, April Mabry, Sharon Moore & Stacey Byrd, all of New Haven; step daughter, Melody Rivera of New York City; sisters, Lucille Little & Lois Westbrook, both of Badin, N.C.; 31 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends. He was predeceased by a son, Miles Curtis and his first wife, Gloria Parker Curtis.
Funeral Services will be held in The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., cor. Dwight, New Haven Thursday at 11:00 AM. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 AM. Interment, with Military Honors, in Beaverdale Memorial Park.

Adeline Piombino Iannucci, 98, of 22 Masonic Ave., Wallingford, passed away May 8, 2008 in Masonic Health Care Center. She was the widow of Joseph F. Iannucci and was a former resident of Palmieri Ave., New Haven. Mrs. Iannucci was born in Pt. Morris, N.J. Aug 22, 1909, daughter of the late Frank & Maria Piombino. She is survived by 2 daughters, Elaine (Joseph) McCurry of Plantsville and Harriet Gallagher of North Ridgefield, Ohio; 4 grandchildren, Judith Travers of West Hartford, Kevin McCurry of Winchester, MA., Lee Ann Sumislawski of Avon, Ohio & Sharon Angradi of Ellicot City, MD.; and 9 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by 5 brothers, Ernest, Arthur, Albert J., John & Edward Piombino and a sister, Katherine Albertini.

Gabriel Anthony (Hollywood) Suscietto, 80, of 25 Hard St., New Haven, died May 7, 2008 in Middlesex Hospice. Born in New Haven March 15, 1928, he was the son of the late Gabriele & Carmela Giannelli Suscietto. He worked as a construction superintendent for many years, most recently for Tandy & Associates, and was a member of Carpenters Union, Local 24. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by a son, Gabriel Anthony Suscietto III of Winsted; 3 daughters, Adrian Martone of New Haven, Antonia Lee Dondero of Portland, CT. & Marieanne Suscietto Dambrov of Springfield, MA.; 2 sisters, Mary Hardy of East Haven & Margaret Paolini of Orange; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and his former wife, Claudette Arel Suscietto of West Haven. He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Lee Suscietto, 3 brothers, Pasquale, Ralph & Stephen Suscietto and 3 sisters, Maria, Gilda & Antoinette Suscietto. His children were fortunate to have had him as their dad and will forever cherish all their precious memories.

Robert W. Duda, 81, of 93 Marvel Road, New Haven died in USVA Medical Center, West Haven May 6, 2008. He was the husband of Pauline Gagnon Duda. Mr. Duda was born in Manchester, N.H. Nov. 22, 1926, son of the late Walter J. & Lillian McGettigan Duda. He earned a master’s degree and worked as a guidance counselor in the New Haven School System from 1968 until his retirement in 1984. Prior to that, he worked for Community Progress, Inc. (CPI). He was a member of San Salvador Council No. 1, Knights of Columbus and the New Haven Chapter of the National Education Association. He was an active volunteer at the Hospital of St. Raphael and Fellowship Place. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a dedicated educator, counselor, family man & friend, and was committed to bettering the lives of disadvantaged children. He took great enjoyment in the company of his family & friends. He was a devoted husband and a hero to his children & grandchildren. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael R. (Lynn) Duda of Trumbull; 2 daughters, Amy E. Duda of New Haven & Anya Duda of West Haven; 2 sisters, Catherine Polinsky of Manchester, N.H. & Joan Duda of Ipswich, MA.; and 3 grandchildren, Amanda, Hannah & Jack. He was predeceased by a sister, Marion Bolos.

Amalia Cancel Reyes, 73, of 64 Mountain Top Lane, New Haven passed away May 1, 2008 in The CT Hospice, Branford. She was the beloved wife of Martin G. Reyes. Mrs. Reyes was born in Jayuya, Puerto Rico on July 17, 1934, daughter of the late Santiago & Felicita Cancel. She came to this country in 1958 and settled in Connecticut in 1975. At various times, she worked as a certified nurse’s aid at Montowese Health Care Center; was a seamstress for members of the NHPD; was a Bible Institute teacher and ran the summer youth program for the Private Industry Council at Second Star of Jacob Church; was a minister of Assemblies of God and was regarded as one of the greatest mothers of all time. Besides her husband, she is survived by 4 sons, Martin Reyes Jr. of New Jersey, Michael Reyes of New Haven, Rev. Marcos Reyes of West Haven & Carmelo Reyes of East Haven; 4 daughters, Maritza Diaz of New Jersey, Amelia Ayala, Maria Melendez & Deborah Quinones, all of New Haven; 34 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and several brothers & sisters, She was predeceased by 2 daughters, Janet Alejandro & Sonia Briones.

Nicholas Frosolone Jr., 81, formerly of 245 Concord St., New Haven, passed away April 16, 2008 in The CT. Hospice, Branford. He was the husband of the late Mildred Martone Frosolone. Mr. Frosolone was born in New Haven April 11, 1927, son of the late Nicholas & Anna Russo Frosolone. He worked as an assembler for Textron – AVCO Lycoming until his retirement in 1991. Prior to that, he was employed at the former High Standard Mfg. Co. in Hamden. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by a son, Nicholas (Regina) Frosolone III of East Haven; 3 daughters, Camille (Dawn) Frosolone of Florida, Roseann(Thomas) Clarino of East Haven and Michele (Gabriel) Varca of Northford; a sister, Jean Garrison of Hamden; and 7 grandchildren, Lisa Frosolone, Nicole (Jon) Valente, Jenny, Michele & Christina Clarino, Angela & Sal Varca. Bernice Aurora Masella, 57 of Hamden entered into peaceful rest on April 1, 2008 in St. Raphael’s Hospital, New Haven. Born in New Haven May 31, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Bernice Lagos and Gaetano (Guy) Masella. Her father was a popular orchestra leader and served as Registrar of Vital Statistics in New Haven. Bernice graduated from Wilber Cross High School as the class Valedictorian, attended Rutgers and received her B.S. degree from Quinnipiac College. She worked at Yale as a Planning Space Coordinator until 2007. Prior to that, Bernice worked at SNET/SBC for 25 years and was manager of Planning in the Real Estate Department when she retired. She is survived by her devoted sister, Gail Masella Medina of Norwalk and nephews, David R. & Craig S. Medina whom she loved dearly. Also surviving are many cousins & relatives including her dear cousin, Nancy Amato and her husband, Nadir who spent countless hours caring for Bernice’s needs during her long illness, and her cousin, Christopher Anastasio. She will be missed by her pets, Bella & Phoebe who gave her great joy and love. Bernice was a jack of all trades. All who knew her benefited from her skills, talents and love.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Road, Norwalk on Saturday, April 19th at 10:00 AM. Raymond Peter Wong, M.D. of 57 Dexter Ave., Meriden passed away March 10, 2008 in Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Wong was born in New London on July 27, 1950, son of Chou Yok Tong Wong of Bronx, NY and the late Win Tin Wong. He graduated from Regis High School in New York in 1968; Fordham University in 1972; George Washington Univ. Medical School in 1976 and did his residency at Univ. of Florida. He worked in the Indian Health Service for 7 years, providing health care to Native Americans in North & South Dakota. For the past 20 years, he has worked at Hill Health Center in New Haven where he served in several capacities including as a member of the Infection Control Committee, coordinator of the Tuberculosis Project and as Chief of Internal Medicine, and was a clinical instructor at Yale Medical School. He spent two decades coaching youth soccer and basketball for the Boys & Girls Club of Meriden and the Meriden Soccer Club. In his spare time, he loved playing basketball with his children and had a great love for animals. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Meriden. Besides his mother, he is survived by 2 sons, Matthew R. Wong of Brooklyn, NY & Christopher Wong of Meriden; a daughter, Shelly K. Wong of Fountain Valley, CA.; and 2 brothers, Kenneth J. Wong of Fresh Meadow, NY & Thomas W. Wong of Bronx, NY. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Battel Chapel at Yale, College & Elm St., New Haven Saturday, March 15th at 11:00 AM. Mr. Polek worked as a mechanic for Conrail for 18 years prior to his retirement 27 years ago. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ruth Kaplan Polek and was the caring father of Steven H. (Bernadette) Polek of Wallingford, Dolores (Frank) Daniele of West Haven, Linda (Mauro) Bonito of North Haven and Patricia (William) Pemberton of East Haven. Lucille M. Harder, 89, of Hamden died Thursday at Yale New Haven Hospital after a prolonged illness. Daughter of Ralph and Esther Esposito of Haven Street, Lucille was born on November 27, 1918, raised in Fair Haven and attended city schools including Hillhouse High School. Lucille graduated from Teachers College in 1941 and received a Master’s Degree of Science in 1972 from Southern Connecticut State College. She taught in public and parochial grammar schools in Middlefield and New Haven including Prince Street, Woodward, West Hills, Cheever, and St. Bernadette’s Schools.In 1945 she married John F. Harder after a long courtship, interrupted by World War II, and they spent their early years together in Chicago as her husband pursued GI Bill graduate studies. They moved to Auburn New York where their four sons, Michael, Peter, Christopher and James, were born.Returning to New Haven in 1956, they lived in Morris Cove for the next forty-eight years. There they raised their family, welcomed grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and were active members of the community and St. Bernadette’s parish. Lucille’s home was a center of welcome and celebration to family and neighbors alike.Lucille and John lived at the Whitney Center in Hamden from 2004 and were active in community life there.Lucille is survived by her sons, six grandsons, Matthew, Stephen, Joshua, Loic, Christopher Ian and Eric and five great-grandchildren, Braeden, Kealey, John Peter, Monroe and Keaton. Edward French Surato, 77, of 163 Ocean View St., Morris Cove, New Haven, passed away Feb. 20, 2008. Mr. Surato was born in Woodbridge on March 28, 1930, son of the late Edward and Fedora Porier Surato. He was educated in New Haven Public Schools where he attended Davis St. School, Sheridan Jr. High and Hillhouse High School, Class of 1948. He graduated from Ohio School of Trades in Columbus and Merchant Marine Academy, St. Petersburg, FL. He served in the Merchant Marine, the Navy Reserve and Coast Guard Auxiliary. After World War II, he served as a sergeant in the US Air Force, stationed with the Army of Occupation in Landstule, Germany. He worked as a gun assembler for Winchester Repeating Arms. A member of Operating Engineers Local 478, he worked for Anthony Julian and C.W. Blakeslee construction companies. He was maintenance supervisor for International Instruments and West Haven Shipyard and was the superintendent at the Doctor’s Building, 2 Church St. South for 18 years prior to retirement. He was a member of D.A.V., V.F.W. and was a Life Member of City Point Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Catherine Arnold Kirkwood; 2 sons, Edward John Surato of New Haven & Philip (Janice) Surato of Cheshire; 2 daughters, Suzanne (John) Smith of West Haven & Darlene Surato of Wallingford; 1 sister, Fedora (Gordon) Surato MacKensie Loth of Surprise, AZ.; 5 grandchildren, Courtney & Christopher Smith, Eric, Jack & Sophia Lauren Surato. Also survived by his first wife, Delores Forcinelli Surato of New Haven. Predeceased by his aunt, Theresa Suarato Torcellini. He will be mourned by his constant companion, Laurence Feline Kirkwood.

Anthony Tammaro, 83, of 825 Whiporwill Drive, Port Orange, FL. passed away Feb. 17, 2008 in Halifax Hospital, Port Orange. He was the husband of the late Mary Ann Connolly Tammaro and was a former resident of 51 Mead St., New Haven. Mr. Tammaro was born in Cusano Mutri, Province of Benevento, Italy on April 25, 1924, son of the late Luciano and Giovannina Petrillo Tammaro. He came to this country at the age of 12. He worked as a machinist for Pratt Whitney Aircraft until his retirement 20 years ago. Prior to that, he worked as a short order cook in several area restaurants. He also was a cook while serving in the US Army during World War II. He is survived by a son, Anthony W. Tammaro of Port Orange, FL.; a brother, Luciano (Rosemarie)Tammaro Jr. of Orange; and several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Gabriel Tammaro. Salvatore J. “Red” Verderame, 81, well known basketball coach and school administrator, passed away Feb. 16, 2008 in CT Hospice, Branford, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Ann Frattini Verderame. Born in New Haven Sept. 3, 1926, he was the son of the late Salvatore & Mary G. Morico Verderame. After coaching at Quinnipiac College for 2 years from 1951 to 1953, he became the basketball coach at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven from 1953 to 1966, compiling a record of 254 wins and only 35 losses. His teams won 5 consecutive District League Championships; 4 consecutive State championships and 2 New England High School Tournament championships. He served as Vice-Principal at Hillhouse High School from 1969 to 1984 and Principal from 1984 to 1990. He undertook many foreign coaching assignments as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Dept. of State between 1963 and 1983, including Africa and the Middle East. His love for Africa inspired him to establish The International Ambassadors For Education program which enabled high school students the opportunity to travel the continent. He was also active in the Special Olympics International Committee. He was awarded the Gold Key by the Conn. Sports Writers Alliance in 1981; was Carmine Criscuolo “Man of the Year” in 1986 and was elected to the CT High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987; New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003 and Wilbur Cross High School Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also the author of several books relating to basketball and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was an avid fisherman who loved spending time with his family & friends. Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Jeffrey P., and his wife, Sherree Verderame of Branford and Randall, and his wife, Dianne Verderame of Westbrook; a daughter, Jody Ford of Killingworth; a brother, Carl Verderame of Glastonbury; a sister, Catherine Volpe of Hamden; and 5 grandchildren, Taylor, Sara, Cody, Hannah & Luke. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Pat & John Verderame and a sister, Marie (Louis) Fronte.

She was a medical research technologist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven until her retirement in 1991. At various times, she worked as a book keeper for Seamless Rubber, Cott Beverages and City Printing until retirement 24 years ago. She acted as a Junior Achievement moderator, was an avid sports fan, quilter & traveler. At one time, she was active with St. Donato’s Parish Children of Mary. John F. Harder, 91, of 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, passed away Jan. 16, 2007 after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Lucille Esposito Harder. Born in Milford Dec. 23, 1916, he was the son of the late Alfred J. & Marion Gebhardt Harder, and the stepson of Helen Duggan Harder. Mr. Harder had a long career in the field of public welfare in New York & Connecticut. From the early 1950’s until his retirement in the 1980’s, he served at many levels of administration, including Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of Welfare during the administrations of Governors Abraham A. Ribicoff and John Dempsey, and was District Director of the New Haven Office, Dept. of Income Maintenance when he retired. He was active in various community agencies as a volunteer and member of a number of boards and advisory committees, including Child & Family Services, So. Central CT. Chapter of American Red Cross, United Ways of Bridgeport & New Haven, and Friends of the New Haven Public Library. After graduation from Holy Cross College in 1937, he returned to New Haven to begin his working life at the Department of Charities. In 1939, he joined the Connecticut National Guard, 208th Coast Artillery, just before the outbreak of World War II. In 1943, while serving in the South Pacific, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the US Army, 209th Antiaircraft Artillery. After the war, he entered graduate school under the GI bill and earned a Master of Arts degree from the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago.
He married the former Lucille Esposito in August 1945 with whom he raised 4 sons, Michael J. Harder of New Haven, Peter J. Harder of Nice, France, Christopher M. Harder of Santa Cruz, CA. & James Harder of Brecksville, OH. He was a grandfather of 6 boys: Matthew, Stephen, Joshua, Loic, Christopher Ian and Eric; and great grandfather of 5 children: Braeden James, Kealey Lauren, John Peter, Monroe Olivia & Keaton Avery. He did dishes and changed diapers for decades. He quoted Winnie-the-Pooh at the most appropriate times. Whenever he was needed by a friend, he could usually be found in Hundred Acre Wood, sitting back to back with one grandson or another, having a little something together. Also surviving are 3 sisters, Cecily Kikukawa of Hawaii, Jean Harder of PA. and Monica Kelly of FL. He was predeceased by a sister, Joan Harder, formerly of Southbury.
A long time parishioner of St. Bernadette’s Church in Morris Cove, Mr. Harder lived the last 4 years of his life at Whitney Center and attended Blessed Sacrament Church. At Whitney Center, he was an active member of the community, and was particularly involved with the film society.

Dr. Alan Brian Gancy, Chemist and American Inventor, passed on is our beloved, January 14, 2008, born of the late Mr. & Mrs. Julius J. Gancy, (Esther DeCapua) of West Haven, CT after a short illness. Dr. Gancy was the son of European born immigrants who resided in Connecticut. He attended Trinity College in undergraduate studies, where he received a B.S. in Chemistry, as well as being the president of the Trinity Chemistry Club, and a member of the Tao Alpha Fraternity. He later attended Yale University, where he earned academic honors and a M.S. degree in Physical Chemistry. He continued his education at Yale, until he received his PhD in 1956. He then worked as the Director of Chemistry for Allied Chemical Corporation, until he founded his own corporation, Gancy Chemical Corporation of Baldwinsville, NY. Along with his many academic achievements, he was listed in ‘American Men of Science’ and chosen for publication in “Who’s Who in Science” and later in: “Who’s who of American Inventors”. He was awarded a high science achievement documented in “American Inventors” and in 1958, was elected to “American Men of Science” More than thirty published scientific works have been attributed to him, as well as private and personal publications of his research. He is listed as an inventor, having accomplished more than 76 US and International Patents, some which were related to top secret government programs, Navy, Army, and the Office of Saline Water. He was noted for his work on ’The Manhattan Project.’ In 1970, Alan was Director of Research for Allied Chemical Corporation. He continued his education and earned an MBA from Syracuse University in 1980, while working as an Associate Professor for the School of Management. He also taught chemistry at Onondaga Community College. He studied operatic voice with Robin Eaton at The Metropolitan School for the Arts, and later joined the Syracuse Opera, appearing in ‘II Trovatore’ and ‘Aida’. He spent several years working in the Syracuse University Oratorio Society. He survived his only brother, Julius S. Gancy (USAC) WWII, (Maria Louise Paradans). He is left in memory by Arlene V. Ghent (Robert Ghent Esq.) and their children, Robert and Ryan Ghent of New Haven, CT. His close companion and devoted friend was Robin Eaton, of Syracuse NY. He leaves nieces: Jacqueline Formica of West Haven, CT, Marilyn McMichael (James McMichael Esq.) of McLean, VA., Sheila Scagnelli, (Mr. David Scagnelli), of Wallingford, CT and Glenda Bouchard of New London CT; their children in fond memory.
A Memorial Service will be held in Battell Chapel, Yale University, Elm and College St., New Haven, on Saturday Feb. 9th at 11:00 AM. Eugene L. Eliasoph died on Saturday, January 5 2008 of heart failure.
Born in Brooklyn in 1925 to Joseph Eliasoph and Paula Rubin Eliasoph, a prominent artist, Eugene (Gene) attended Jamaica High and Queens College. He was a decorated veteran of World War II who fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he was captured and escaped.
Gene was a gifted psychotherapist. He received his Masters in Social Work from Columbia and studied at the William Alanson White School and with JL Moreno, an early pioneer of group therapy. In private practice in New Haven for 40 years, he served on the clinical faculty at the Yale Department of Psychiatry. Gene was renowned for his work as a group therapist and psychodramatist. He founded the Psychodrama Institute of New Haven and was President of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama from 1984-1986. Hundreds of patients and his trainees will remember him for his skill, creativity and compassion.
Gene was an excellent tennis player and athlete; he was scouted for the New York Giants before the war. He was an excellent jazz musician, playing clarinet and saxophone at venues from the Borscht Belt to 52nd Street as a young man and continuing in many bands and informal groups until his death.
Gene is survived by his wife Mary Nicholas, who is a psychotherapist in New Haven, and by his daughters Ellen Eliasoph and Nina Eliasoph and their husbands; grandchildren Jade Kasoff, Olivia Lichterman and Leo Eliasoph; sister Janet Kaufman, niece Jeannie Skinner; and nephews-- Philip, Joseph and Scott Eliasoph; and his cousin Julian Eliasoph.

Mrs. Berger was born in New Haven June 7, 1922, daughter of the late Anthony R. and Chiarina “Katie” Capobianco Esposito. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and, later, was a vessel documentation officer for the U.S. Coast Guard for 14 years prior to retirement. He is survived by a daughter, Nita K. Marion Frances Giaimo, 88, widow of former Third Dist. Congressman Robert N. Giaimo, died Dec. 12, 2007 in Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, VA. She was a resident of Arlington, VA. And Boca Raton, FL. Born in Westmont, N.J. on Nov. 7, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Raymond & Emily Schuenemann. She was a graduate of Brenau College in Gainesville, GA. and UCONN Law School. Prior to moving to Washington in 1969, she helped organize the North Haven League of Women Voters; was an organizer and director of North Haven National Bank and was active in the Ridge Road School PTA. She was also a member of Mayor Lee’s Community Council for the Aging and New Haven Board of Family Services. She served on the Board of Trustees of Brenau College. In the 1960’s, she was co-owner of Giaimo Realty. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Lee Koones of Potomac, MD and a granddaughter, Tracy Elizabeth Phillips of Washington, D.C.

David D. “Dave” Harding, 46, of 41 Howard Ave., New Haven passed away Dec. 11, 2007 in Yale New Haven Hospital following a long illness battling juvenile diabetes. He was the husband of Ruth E. Swanton. Born in New Haven Sept. 9, 1961, he was the son of John & Jean Viera Harding of Florida. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Syracuse in 1983. He began his sales career as a sales manager of rare book collections; worked in antique sales; became a financial advisor; and then a middle school teacher. He earned a master’s degree in teaching in 1995 and a master’s degree in science at Quinnipiac in 2001. David loved being a teacher, but, during his first position, his kidneys failed. Despite a kidney transplant donated by his Dad, he was unable to continue. An inspiration, he lived a full, yet short life. His teaching began again following the birth of daughter, Kate, age 5. A renaissance man, he will be missed for his laughter, wit and zest for fun, movies, music and learning. Beside his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Katherine Grace Swanton Harding of New Haven; a brother, Jack (Vanessa Rose) Harding of Seymour and a sister, Kim (David) Vegliante of Wallingford; nieces & nephews, Samuel, Raymond, Maxwell & Mary of Seymour, Jack & Olivia of Wallingford. He was predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Olivia Veira and his aunt, Diane Radcliffe. A special thanks to Dr. Rex Mahnensmith, MD and Warren Fleming, RN at Davita Dialysis Unit; and to the many physicians and nurses at Yale New Haven Hospital and Brook Hollow Health Care Center who assisted in his quest to continue his life.

Governor Sheats III, 63, departed this life Dec. 7, 2007. Born in Athens, GA. July 21, 1944, he was the son of the late Governor Sheats Jr. & Floreen Barnett. He was cared for by his mother until he entered Southbury Training School in 1958 at the age of 14. He was transferred to Hillside Manor in Hartford in 1976, at the age of 32. He came to Marrakech-Cortina House in East Haven in 1991, to be closer to his family. He is survived by 4 sisters, Jackie Sheats & Kathie Simmons, both of New Haven, Frankee Goodman of Hamden & Vicki Watson of Odenton, MD.; a brother, Eddie (Adrienne) Sheats of Hamden; 10 nieces & nephews, 17 great nieces & nephews, and a special niece, Steyfanie Hudgens who assisted in his care.

John E. (Swede) Lindquist, 87, of 400 Blatchley Ave., New Haven, passed away Dec. 6, 2007 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the husband of Josephine Piscitelli Lindquist. “Swede” was born in New Haven Dec. 12, 1919, son of the late Gustaf & Anna Lindquist. Well known throughout the New Haven area, he retired from The UI Co. after 40 years in the Employment Relations Dept. as Personnel Service Administrator. He served in the US Coast Guard during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 88 in Hamden. He served as vice chairman of the New Haven Coliseum Authority for 26 years under five mayoral administrations; former softball commissioner for State of CT.; past president of CT Amateur Softball Assn.; past vice chairman of CT State Boating Commission; chairman of REGISTER Fresh Air Fund Special Events, raising over $130,000 in 18 years; vice chairman of Albie Booth Memorial Fund; past president of New Haven Football Foundation and Hall of Fame; past president of Industrial Recreation Council – YMCA; past commodore of Branford Yacht Club; and was a member of New Haven Tap-Off Club, East Haven Stoners, Connecticut Hospice Committee, Farnham Neighborhood House Board of Directors, Russell Council No. 65, Knights of Columbus and John Barry Assembly, Fourth Degree, K of C. He was also a Deputy Sheriff for New Haven County. His numerous awards included the Distinguished American Award by National Football Foundation, New Haven Chapter; the Charles Carroll of Carrolton Medal by the Knights of Columbus; the Veritas Award from Providence College; the Friars Award from St. Mary’s High School Alumni Assn.; the Gold Ring Award from the Albie Booth Boys Club; Benedictine Medal of Honor from St. Leo’s College; Friendship Award from Ancient Order of Hibernians; Humanitarian Awards from Knights of St. Patrick in 1991 and from Maples A.C.; Jimmy Fund Cancer Award; Sport Service Award by Sport Magazine; New Haven Register Fresh Air Fund Award; Carmine Criscuolo Memorial Award; and received Merit Awards from New Haven Football Foundation & New Haven Athletic Club. He was honored by having a softball field named for him; was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame; and was the subject of “The Salute of the Month” by the New Haven Register in February 1979.Besides his wife, he is survived by several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Arnold Lindquist and a sister, Edna Dunn.

Before coming to this country, he served with the British Armed Forces for 6 years during World War II and saw action against the German Army in North Africa. She was a graduate of Commercial High School and was employed as a clerical worker at the University of New Haven. Mary was a kind and generous woman whose heart and home were always open to all. She was a graduate of Hillhouse High School and attended Collegiate Preparatory School in New Haven. She worked at A.C. Gilbert Co. during and after WW II. After her marriage in 1947, she moved to Washington, D.C. and resided there until her husband’s unexpected passing in 1960. A long time resident of West Haven, she was a substitute teacher at St. Lawrence School and later, worked as a dental assistant for her brother, Dr. Michael Arabolos. She was a member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Angelo G. & Sandie Chipouras of Winter Garden, FL.; sister and brother in law, Lillian & Edward Basel of East Haven; 1 grand daughter, Anastasia; 5 great grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews. Carlo Zazzarino, 63, of 242 Second Ave., West Haven ascended to peace on Sept. 13, 2007 in The CT. Hospice, Branford with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 35 years of Linda Meneo Zazzarino. Mr. Zazzarino was born in Alife, Italy Feb. 15, 1944, son of Mrs. Marianna Capasso Zazzarino of West Haven and the late Pietro Zazzarino. He came to this country in 1958. His profession was in electronics and T.V. repair, but his talents ranged from everything to anything. There was nothing he couldn’t or wouldn’t do. He was extremely proud to be an Italian and always celebrated his heritage and culture and enjoyed visiting his respected home town of Alife in Caserta. He had a deep passion for music, especially Italian, was a musician, singer and guitarist and loved to play anywhere, anytime, whether among friends and family or at festivals. His musical gifts were bestowed upon his sons and daughter, which always made him extremely proud. He was a man of great pride and respect; kind hearted who deserved the world and more and all he ever wanted was to be sure that everyone he loved had just that. He is and forever will be deeply loved and missed more than words could ever express. He will be deeply missed by his 5 grandchildren who gave him nothing but joy; they were the true love of his life. Carlo was a loving, genuinely sincere and caring man, who loved nothing more than his family. May he rest in peace with our Savior, Jesus Christ and know how loved and remembered he will always be. Gordon Bilides, 80, of 46 Hampshire Drive, Hamden, passed away Sept. 13, 2007 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the husband of Florence DeVivo Bilides. Mr. Balides was born in New Haven Sept. 1, 1927, son of the late Michael & Domna Bilides. He waa a graduate of Hillhouse High School and Yale University. He worked as a civil engineer and land surveyor for Blair Associates for 13 years before establishing his own business in 1963. After World War II, he served with the US Army of Occupation in Japan. He was a member of Chapter 98, Order of AHEPA. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, David (Sandra Dean) Bilides of Seattle, WA.; a daughter, Sophia (Tom Babbin) Bilides of Natick, MA.; 2 sisters, Elizabeth Cargos & Despina (Michael) Doty, both of Lakeland, FL. He was predeceased by a brother, Philip Bilides.

Joseph Michael Carta, 63, of 12 Forest Ave., North Haven, passed away Aug. 30, 2007 in St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Patricia Cavuoti Workman Carta. Mr. Carta was born in Middletown on July 9, 1944, son of the late Joseph and Concetina Adorno Carta. He worked as a conductor for Metro North Commuter Railroad for 35 years prior to retirement in 2004. He was a member of ACRE Local No. 1. After retirement, he worked with his son in law and grandson in their maple syrup business in Guilford. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, working in the garden, playing with his grandchildren and fishing for crabs. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Eric Carta of Middletown; 3 daughters, Candace Chapman of Milford, Tracy Thurston of Greenwich, N.Y. & Kimberly Hall of Guilford; a brother, Louis Carta of Wallingford; a sister, Elaine Carta of Middletown; 4 grandchildren, Michael & Matthew Hall, Karlee Chapman & Joseph Thurston; an aunt, an uncle, several nieces, nephews & cousins.

Deidre Lee Robinson, 55, of 496 Elm St., New Haven, passed away suddenly Aug. 25, 2007. Born in New Haven June 19, 1952, she was the beloved daughter of Gertrude Dortch Robinson of New Haven and the late Henry Robinson Sr. She attended Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. and also attended college in New York City, pursuing studies and training as a sign language interpreter. She worked as a sign language interpreter for the State of Connecticut, the City of Shelton and for Marrakech, Inc. Deidre was always the life of the party and was known for her contagious laugh. Besides her mother, she is survived by a sister, Lois A. Robinson of New Haven; four nieces, Virginia, Sheeva & Stacey Williams and Bryonna Pinero; a nephew, Alexander Pinero; her dear family friend, Ernestine Fisher of New Haven, whom she considered a sister; as well as several grand nieces & nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a brother, Henry Robinson Jr. and a sister, Rebecca Williams.

He was the father of Alexander Marathas of New Haven, the brother of Demetra (Manny) Kalogianes of Wethersfield and the late Maria Stroboer He was the brother in law of Angie Arnaoutis and Mary Mattie. Mr. Marathas was born in New Haven January 12, 1938 a son of the late Alexander and Bessie Laggis Marathas. Gus served in the US Navy and was a regional sales manager for several corporations that manufactured industrial valves. He is also survived by his nephew George (Kelly) Arnaoutis and their children Haley, Nicole, and Andrew and his niece Maria (Anthony) and her children Aubrie and Krystina.

He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal and was a member of the Hamden VFW Post 10321. Mary Ulizio Grande, 101, of Westerly, R.I. and Hamden, CT. entered into peaceful eternal rest at her home on July 25, 2007. She was the widow of Carlo H. Grande. Born in New Haven on Palm Sunday, April 16, 1906, she was christened Palma Maria Ulizio, daughter of the late Antonio and Francesca Zullo Ulizio. She graduated from Hillhouse High School and the former Arnold College, and studied at Columbia University. She was a member of the legendary Radio City Music Hall Rockettes dancing troupe and was recreational director at the New York Boys Club. Mrs. Grande taught school for more than 50 years, including 40 years with the New Haven school system, rising to the position of Supervisor of Physical Education. She retired in 1970. With her lifelong friend, Ellen L. Celentano, she originated and directed the “Harvest Festival Committee” in the 1950’s. This involved all area high schools and included an elaborate Pageant at Yale Bowl. With Pat Morro, she established the after school recreation program at Trowbridge Recreation Center, which produced some of New Haven’s finest young athletes. She was the first to establish a summer recreational playground program for the New Haven Dept. of Parks & Recreation and ran that program for many years, presenting many historical pageants on the New Haven Green during the 1950’s & 1960’s. The recipient of numerous awards from local organizations, she was active for many years in the Mayor’s New Haven Columbus Day Committee, the Italian American Society, the Hamden Republican Women’s Club, and was the first secretary of the inaugural Walter Camp Football Foundation Committee. She was a member of the Governor’s Committee on Physical Fitness under Gov. John Dempsey and helped to establish the committee for the formulation of the Church of the Ascension Parish in Hamden. After moving to Westerly, Mary was a member of the Westerly Board of Education Building Committee. More than anything, she cherished her family and friends and was always happiest when with them. Her family will be forever grateful for the wonderful care provided by Dr. Rodney Steller and the late Dr. Luca E. Celentano in New Haven and Dr. Robert Serra & Staff in Westerly. In recent years, Mary was blessed with the spiritual enrichment of Pastor Kenneth Suibielski & Deacon Carl LaFleur of St. Clare’s Church, Misquamicut, R.I.; the love and care of attending friends & family; and Hospice care in Westerly, all of whom brightened her life each day. “We thank you and we love you”. She is survived by a son & daughter in law, George and JoAnne Grande of Hamden; Pat Grande, former wife of Carlo II of Westerly; a grandson, Geoffrey Grande and granddaughter, Jaime and her husband, Bryan McAllister Grande. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Carlo H. Grande; a son, Carlo Grande II; 3 brothers, George, Paul & Louis Ulizio and 5 sisters, Julia Conte, Amelia Barberi, Carmel Angelo, Rose DeFalco & Luisa Purpora.

Barbara Francis Muzzi, 61, of 100 Davis St., New Haven, passed away at home July 5, 2007. She was the beloved wife of George R. Muzzi. She was born in New Haven June 11, 1946, daughter of the late Albert & Doris Dodd Francis. Beside her husband, she is survived by 2 sons, George A. Muzzi of New Haven and Albert J. (Megan) Muzzi of Derby; a sister, June Hodson of New Haven and one grandchild, Hailey Michelle Muzzi.

Mary Jane Daurio Pelliccio, 49, of 25 Peters Lane, North Haven, passed away peacefully at home July 3, 2007. She was the wife of Anthony G. Pelliccio. Born in New Haven Sept. 9, 1957, she was the daughter of the late James & Ruby Powers Daurio. Mary Jane held clerical positions at King’s Dept. Store, Ames, Stop & Shop and A T & T and worked at the Box Office at the New Haven Coliseum for several years until it closed on Aug. 30, 2002. Beside her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Rose Pelliccio of North Haven; a brother, Patrick “Buddy” Powers of Orange; a sister, Joan Schlauder of New Haven; and many devoted friends & family. She was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite “Maggie” Daurio.

Johnnie Mae Sanders Davis, 72 of 157 Clay St., New Haven passed away July 1, 2007 in The Connecticut Hospice, Branford. She was the beloved wife of Paul Davis Sr. Born in Shorter, AL. on July 7, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Antonio & Mary Lee Sanders Chardon. She came to New Haven in 1956 and worked at Grace New Haven Hospital (now Yale New Haven) She met and married Paul Davis in 1957. They were married 50 years and never left each other’s side until her death on July 1, 2007. She was a member of East Rock Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for the past 35 years, never waivering. Mrs. Davis leaves to grieve her passing two sons, Paul Davis Jr. & Antonio Davis, both of New Haven; three daughters, Tamela Davis Bash of West Haven, Sandy M. & Ira S. Davis, both of New Haven; 14 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives & friends. She was predeceased by her 3 oldest children including Amos Sanders.
Funeral Services in The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight), New Haven Saturday at 10:00 AM. Calling hours one hour before the service from 9 to 10 AM. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.

Francis M. “Frank” Palmieri, 86, of Donna Lane, West Haven passed away at home on June 29, 2007. Born in New Haven Sept. 19, 1921, he was the son of the late Michele & Immaculata Romano Palmieri. He was a graduate of Providence College. He resided in New Haven until moving to West Haven in 1970. Since 1957, he was employed by the City of New Haven in various technical and administrative capacities including the Tuberculosis & Health associations, the Health Department, The New Haven Redevelopment Agency, and the Building Inspection and Enforcement Agency until his retirement in 1987. During World War II, he served in the US Army Medical Corps from 1943 to 1946.. He is survived by 4 sisters, Mary Orsini, Tena Parise, Patty Annatone & Margaret Palmieri, all of West Haven; and several nieces & nephews, including his caregiver, Robert Pidskalny. He was predeceased by 4 sisters, Adeline Mansi, Frances Vanacore, Ann Popolizio, Rose Pidskalny and an infant brother, Michele Palmieri Jr.
Funeral services will be private. Interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of The Celentano Funeral Home, New Haven. Anthony Bost, 21, of 150 Church St., Hamden, died June 26, 2007 in Yale New Haven Hospital. Born in New Haven Nov. 25, 1985, he was the son of Randy and Patricia Watts Bost of Hamden. Beside his parents, he is survived by 1 brother, Eric Bost of Bronx, N.Y.; 2 sisters, Melissa Robinson of Hickory, N.C. and Karen Hunt of Charlotte, N.C.; his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Watts of New Haven as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives & friends. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Alston C. Watts and his paternal grandparents, Gaither & Mary Bost.

Roy L. Bennett, 86, husband of the late Rose Formichella Bennett, died peacefully at his home June 24, 2007. He was a resident of East Haven for 50 years. Mr. Bennett was born in Troy NY, Dec. 11, 1920 a son of the late Fredrick and Francis Lee Bennett. He served in the Navy during WWII and worked as an electrician. Roy was a member of the I.B.E.W Local # 90 for 60 years. He is survived by 2 sons; Douglas Bennett and his wife Loretta of Wallingford and Gerald Bennett and his wife Bonita of Woodbridge. Mr. Bennett is also survived by 5 grandchildren; Madeleine, Jessica, Jeremy, Timothy, and Susanna.

August Kakalow, 89, formerly of New Port Richey, FL. and Lake St., Wallingford, died June 17, 2007 in Masonic Healthcare Center. He was the husband of Jennie Botta Kakalow and the late Joan E. Archer Kakalow. Born in Derby on Sept. 13, 1917, he was the son of the late James and Athena Kakalow. A house painter by trade, he worked for over 40 years for S. Russota & Son, Joseph Cohn & Son, Inc. as well as for himself. He was a member of Painters Union Local 186. He has lived in New Port Richey for the past 27 years. A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of Olive Branch Lodge No. 84, A.F. & A.M. During World War II, he served with the US Army Medical Detachment in the Asiatic-Pacific War Theater. Beside his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, James (Patricia) Kakalow of West Haven & Michael A. (Maria) Kakalow of Wallingford; a brother, Michael Kakalow of Grants Pass, Oregon; a sister, Mrs. James (Lillian) Poulmas of Naugatuck; 5 grandchildren, Gus Kakalow of KY., Michael J. Kakalow of Wallingford, Karen Daley of North Branford, Chris Kakalow of North Haven & Greg Kakalow of New Haven; and 6 great grandchildren.
