Reverend Joseph Marcel Ricard, 79, of Davenport, FL died in the Good Shepherd Hospice, Auburndale, FL May 29, 2007 after a brief illness. Father Ricard was born in Watertown, CT Jan. 8, 1928 a second son of the late Alide and Alma Miller Ricard. A graduate of Plainfield High school, he attended Assumption College and received his BA from St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, MD. Serving in the Air Force from 1948-1955 he was stationed throughout the US and eventually with NATO in Italy as a Staff Sergeant who was discharged with a Good Conduct Medal, along with other ribbons. Ordained in St. Patrick Cathedral, Norwich on May 7, 1964 by Bishop Hines he faithfully served the Diocese of Norwich before retiring in May of 1994. As the proud National Chaplain for Project freedom, an organization seeking an accounting of all MIAs and POWs of the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, he received a Letter of Commendation from Gen. William Westmoreland. Joe was an accomplished author and cook as well as a dear friend. He was the brother of Roland and Yvon Ricard of Florida and the late Armand, Jean-Louis, Yolande, and Robert Ricard. He is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, D.D., Bishop of Norwich, in the Cathedral of St. Patrick, Tuesday at 10:30 AM. Father Ricard will lie in state in the Cathedral from 9:30- 10:30. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Place Soup Kitchen, 10 Railroad Pl., Norwich, CT, 06360. The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., New Haven is in charge of the arrangements.
