Helen Basel Faraclas, 89, of Branford, passed away peacefully at Yale-New Haven Hospital on December 7, surrounded by her family.  She was born in New Haven on June 10, 1926, to the late William and Antiope Basel.  She married her one and only sweetheart, George Nicholas Faraclas, with whom she spent 65 loving years of marriage, characterized by faith, family, charity, and laughter.  She will be remembered for energy and kindness that were boundless and for her warm, perpetual smile.A devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Helen’s greatest joy was spending time with family.  A proud communicant of, and tirelessly active volunteer at, Saint Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church in Orange, she spent over 50 years as a dedicated member of the church choir and Philoptochos Society.  For 35 years she played a prominent role in the church’s annual Odyssey Festival as chairperson of “Treasures ‘n Junque,” a labor of love, collecting and selling tens of thousands of items to benefit the church. For 30 years, Helen loved working alongside her siblings and their spouses at Basel’s Restaurant in New Haven where she served the area’s best Greek food and taught Greek dancing.  When not working, she enjoyed playing cards and was a diehard Red Sox fan.

Helen leaves her daughter, Anne, of Branford, son William (Kara), of Southbury, and son Paul (Jacqueline), of North Branford; six grandchildren, Elias (Erin), Christian (Christine), Farah, Azer, Allison and Kristen; great-grandsons, Tristan and Devin; siblings Louis Basel of Derby, Florence Barakis of Branford and Edward (Lillian) Basel of East Haven; and in-laws Helen and John Karanzias, Marion and Fred Scimone and Pearl Faraclas.  She was predeceased by husband George, in-laws Marie Basel and Stanley Barakis.Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Sunday from 4 to 8 PM, and are invited to attend funeral services at Saint Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange, Monday, December 14, at 9:30 AM, with interment in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Barbara Building Fund in Orange, CT.
